Less is more

After a late night last night (reading blogs, of course!) my body was not pleased with being dragged out of bed early this morning. I had to drive my dad into the city (which is about 1 hour away from our house) for an appointment. But I made it up to my angry, tired self by serving up a huge bowl of broccoflower and spinach oats, with an extra generous tablespoon (or two…) of almond, brazil and cashew nut butter.

breakfast

One good thing about early appointments is that you don’t lose you whole day! Importantly, we got home in time for ‘Ellen’ today. I was pretty happy about this. But my happiness soon turned to disappointment. Here in Melbourne they are screening episodes of Ellen from December of last year. What the??? How hard can it be to show recent episodes? I mean technically, we are AHEAD of the US in terms of time, so showing especially old episodes is doubly frustrating (ok, that argument wasn’t particularly cogent, but you get my point…) On a different yet vaguely related point, one thing I really want to do is try to get tickets to see a taping of Ellen when I go to the US. Has anyone ever been to the taping of a TV show before??

Next up was lunch. Basically, I sourced whatever edible leftovers I could from the fridge, and threw them into a frittata. This included onion, broccoli, asparagus, chicken and cheese.  On the side is a chopped tomato with lots of pepper and some sour cream. We looovveee tomatos with sour cream in this house, but I’m thinking that might be a bit of an odd food combo? Are you a fan of any strange food combinations?

lunch

Today at the gym I did 40 minutes on the elliptical and 20 minutes of leg work (step-ups with DB’s and squats with a barbell). It was a good workout! One thing I noticed while at the gym was a girl who had a full face of make-up on.  While I can understand maybe having some makeup on because you’ve come straight from work and can’t be bothered wiping it off (this happens to me). I think that’s not so bad. But this girl had it on thick, with lots of black eyeliner – it looked like she was about to go clubbing or something. I think there’s a point where you should just take the make-up off because you look a little ridiculous. What are your thoughts on this? Do you ever wear make-up to the gym?

Dinner tonight was late – but good. Dad and I tried to make a variation on the stuffed capsicum (or bell pepper… whatever you call it) we had earlier in the week, and I think ours was excellent! We filled the capsicum with a mixtre of minced meat,  napoli sauce and butternut pumpkin. We topped it with some mozzerella cheese. On the side we had some sweet potato and butternut pumpkin fries and salad. Question: Is ‘butternut squash’ (which I read a lot about on your blogs) the same as ‘butternut pumpkin’? Or are they two different things?

dinner

After my satisfying dinner, I went to my friends place to drink peppermint tea, eat marshmellows, and catch up on some gossip. It was great seeing the girls! Now I’m well and truly ready to go to sleep, my body is not pleased about me keeping it away from my comfy, warm bed…

I have no idea if they are different, hmm! Interesting question, I’d love to hear the answer :D Sorry I can’t be of more help. Your eats look great today! I never get tired of your breakfasts. Bfast always cheers me up too! I think tomato and sour cream sounds really good! I don’t think I have any odd combinations. If I think of any I’ll be sure to tell ya :D

Father’s Day is in September? That’s so weird! It’s always the third Sunday in June in the States.

As for the restaurant deal, I’m really not sure. Last year, I used to be CRAZY strict with my food intake but I realized I was making everyone around me way unhappy with my “rules,” so I tried to loosen up a bit, but they still just make me uneasy. What can I say…I’m quirky! =]

That frittata (that is a WEIRD looking word) looks delicious! I may have to steal that idea from you one day. I’ve never made one. Is there some secret way to do it or is it pretty basic?

There’s a blogger (livelaughlyss.wordpress) who used to intern for Ellen! She could probably give you info :) Oh and I’m pretty sure that Ellen is on repeat since it’s the summer?

That frittta looks fantastic! The bnut fries look great as well!!

  4. 4 Erin June 19, 2009 at 3:06 am

That fritatta looks phenom! So do the tomatoes + sour cream. I never though to do that! Eating marshmallows with girlfriends is fun!

Ooh I hate when they stick me with reruns of shows that I really want to see. I think she’s just not doing a season right now so they’re just playing random ones. Boo to TV.

It actually irritates me when girls wear caked on make up to the gym/on a run. There’s a girl on XC who does it every single day, without fail, no matter how early. I think it’s silly because one: you’re going to sweat it off/smudge it if you’re working out, and two: you’re probably going to take a shower afterwards anyway, and three: are you really that shallow that you care so much about your looks even in a GYM? You can tell I’ve never given this any thought before, haha. :)

I have no idea if they are the same thing! I’ve only heard butternut squash, never butternut pumpkin. That fritatta looks delicious as well.

    Much love,
    Rachel

Ohmygoodness, I want to go to so many show tapings. Maybe it’s just because I work in broadcasting, but I would choose that over anything else when travelling. I used to work camera for live studio shows here in town. I loved seeing all the behind the scenes stuff and the work that goes into a show. (although, not too fun to spend the show on your feet handling a giant camera…)

Love all your eats today. Tomatoes and sour cream sounds really good actually. I mean, salsa and sour cream is a great combo…

And Hamilton is unfortunately pretty far from me. My province borders Maine, so I’m actually closer to the New England states than I am to Ontario!

Your frittata looks great! Tea, marshmallows and gossip sound pretty good too!

  8. 8 Melissa @ For the Love of Health June 19, 2009 at 4:30 am

of course you can enter my contest!! :-)

    frittata looks delicious!

sorry to hear you had to take a lot of time getting to and from the city.

great workout!! I hear ya on the done up chicks at the gym. I may have makeup on sometimes BUT it’s only because I am super lazy and go straight from work haha It’s after wearing it all day so it fades. I really should not be so darn lazy though..

Dinner looks so gooooood! YUM! I don’t think those two butternuts are the same thing at all…

    Hi darlin,

aw so nice of you to give your dad a lift even if it meant getting up super early!

love your lunch :) that frittata looks delicious!

i dont go to the gym, i do my cardio outside in the park near my house and strngth training and light weights at home, but when i go for a run i never wear make up and when i used to go to the gym a while back i never wore any either..it just goes all gross when you sweat. I hate melting make up…

im glad you had a fun time catching up with your friends :) and i hope you get a great nights sleep tonight hun, sounds like you need it!!

Lol, I laughed at your ‘Ellen’ comment. Somehow I don’t think your point that Australia is ahead of US time will bear much weight in the production studios :P

I’ve never tried tomatoes and sour cream straight up though it sounds good- I put tomatoes in tacos with other stuff including sour cream…sounds good to me! I like ketchup on eggs- anyone I meet seems to think that is really weird but a lot of bloggers do it. Though bloggers do a lot of foodie things that the general public think is kind of strange!

I was going to ask YOU if butternut pumpkin was the same as squash- do you have a picture of it pre-cut? Am guessing it’s the same thing.

I wouldn’t wear make-up to the gym- a lot of people in my dance class used to and I never understood it. No amount of make-up can make you look pretty and glam when you are sweating buckets and spinning on your head in a breakdance class!

hope you have a good night and catch up on sleep! Now I am craving marshmallows…

  11. 11 Alison June 19, 2009 at 4:55 am

Your workouts sound just like mine – 40 min on elliptical and 20 min of strength. Great minds think alike :-)

Did you make the almond, cashew, and brazil nut butter youself? I love brazil nuts.

  12. 12 Sarah June 19, 2009 at 7:52 am

i’ve never had tomatoes and sour cream before either … but i imagine it’s an excellent combo bc they go quite well together in mexican food!

and i’m pretty sure that butternut squash and butternut pumpkin are the same … i remember so many things that we call squash being called pumpkin when i was in australia!

  13. 13 Michelle June 19, 2009 at 9:13 am

I do not understand make-up or mobile phones while working out.

  14. 14 gina June 19, 2009 at 9:30 am

Yum, tomatoes with sour cream?? Sounds like a great combination. I think it’s so great that you and your dad share the same great taste in healthy, ecclectic foods.

Like you I hate it when they play OLD Ellens. Sometimes I wish I wasn’t so good about watching every episode because then the re-runs wouldn’t be re-runs, ya know???

  15. 15 april June 19, 2009 at 10:47 am

Awesome looking oats! I have yet to try the spinach combo! To answer your question on the puffed millet, it doesn’t have much flavor but it adds a lot of bulk to cereal, yogurt, etc. It only has 60 calories per cup so it’s not very filling but good when you want volume!

  16. 16 erinstark June 19, 2009 at 10:52 am

I can’t believe your Dad eats so healthy :P Mine would probably rather eat his own arm than eat stuffed capsicum :( Bloody men.

And, from another Aussie POV, I think that butternut squash and butternut pumpkin are the same. I’ve noticed on a lot of American recipe websites, if you search for ‘pumpkin’ nothing comes up… but if you search for ’squash’, you get recipes that look like they involve pumpkin!

  17. 17 Meg June 19, 2009 at 11:00 am

    Yummy eats! Dinner looks awesome!

  18. 18 Karina Pinzon June 19, 2009 at 11:45 am

Your frittata looks amazing! I am a huge fan of weird combos, so don’t worry, haha.

I think it is so unnecessary and find it a bit ridiculous to wear makeup to the gym. It is a waste of good eye liner- you are going to sweat it off.

And thank you! I use a Canon Powershot S51S :)

  19. 19 Ashley June 19, 2009 at 11:49 am

Oooh, the tomato and sour cream combo is one I’m going to have to try.

I usually have my makeup on at the gym because I’ve come straight from work, and then I look REALLY good when I have big brown and black smudges all over my T-shirt. Eeek!

  20. 20 randomlymikey June 19, 2009 at 11:52 am

so many questions in your post and i don’t have good answers for any of them. lol. i am one of those weird people that don’t have t.v. so i have never even seen ‘ellen’ but i do hear good things about the show. that would be fun to go to a taping.
at first i thought “tomatoes and sour cream? odd” but when i started thinking about it, it didn’t seem too weird. i put ketchup on eggs, tuna on baked potatoes, i’ll make egg/tuna/cottage cheese salad. PB on everything. lol. i agree with the comment that bloggers usually do foodie things that others might find weird. we’re adventurous! lol.
make up at the gym is a no-no. i’ll go with you on being too busy or something when coming from work or whatever. but when you exercise/sweat all that stuff gets in your pores. yucky. and the goth eyes would def. look outta place at the gym.
    get some rest chika :)

OMG OMG OMG I JUST FINISH MY LAST SEMESTER EXAM – WOOT!!! *Oh yea baby!!!*

Ok, back to my normal self – YES YES, I so agree with you on the Ellen show issue – I was watching it the other day – the show was on presidential election :( And OH! Go to the Ellen’s show webpage and there’s a tab for “BE ON THE SHOW” or sumthing. :D

To answer your question – yes butternut squash = butternut pumpkin, so is kabocha = jap pumpkin, and I FOUND SPAGHETTI SQUASH, it’s called gem squash here (I think) it’s small, round and deep green in colour …. but when you cook it, the flesh is stringy!!

    • 22 Ashley June 19, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Well done on finishing your exams Cecelia! That is so so sooo exciting!!! And thanks for clearing up the squash/pumpkin dilemma. And I’m stoked I can finally get kabocha (aka jap pumpkin)!!!

  22. 23 coco June 19, 2009 at 9:37 pm

lack of sleep isn’t fun but we tend to do it ironically when we’re on vacation!
working out with tons of makeup? oh no!!! that’s really bad for the skin!
    dinner looks delicious!!! :)

  23. 24 brandi June 19, 2009 at 11:25 pm

that frittata looks great! i love tomatoes with just about anything.

  24. 25 katecooks June 20, 2009 at 7:25 am

i had an early appt yesterday but it wasnt so great going into work right after!!! i’ve gone to a few show tapings. i think they are all free (??) and even though they can stretch out a little long sometimes, they are a lot of fun!!!!

  25. 26 JB June 20, 2009 at 8:06 am

i go to the gym first thing in the morning. zero makeup on. if i ever happen to go in the afternoon, i usually don’t take off the makeup that i already have on. but i don’t wear too much makeup anyway, so it’s not as if i ever workout with a face full of gunk. that would feel so gross mixed with sweat!

it’s such a coincidence that you mentioned weird food combinations. in my most recent post, i talked about how it’s bullshit to care if things “go together.” sometimes things just taste greatly together…even if it seems odd! and that’s that. but honestly, i don’t find tomatoes with sour cream strange at all!

    have a splendid friday! :)

  26. 27 Jessica (jesslikesithot) June 20, 2009 at 8:41 am

Unless i’m feeling really lazy, i’ll wear a little cover-up and mascara to the gym…but never decked out as if I was heading to a club afterwards! :)

Sounds like you had a great workout though, and the meals look great!

  27. 28 Kailey June 20, 2009 at 10:31 am

i totally agree that early morning appts. are so much better because you just get them over with and don’t have to worry about them messing up your plans.
    great eats :)
