Early mornings

So it’s about 1am here in Melbourne and I am blogging whilst watching the mens Wimbeldon Grand Final. Roddick has taken the first set, Federer the second, and it is 5-6 in the third. If you’re not watching this, you are missing out! It has been great tennis so far! I hope Roddick wins because he’s such a cutie and definately the underdog, but I’ll be happy if Federer takes it out (which I predict is what will happen). Hopefully I can stay awake to see the end of this!

I was up early on Saturday morning to meet with my running group. It was such a wet and yucky morning – pouring down with rain, windy and cold! But the thing about running group is that you become so consumed with simply surviving the session, that you end up forgetting about the rain and stop caring about the puddles. It’s always a hard session, but like my personal training, I feel so awesome afterwards. No pain no gain.

I came home to a bowl of outgurt blended with cauliflower, banana and tofu. Topped with ABC spread. There’s nothing like over-ripe bananas in oats. Makes such a difference.

Breakfast Sat

After my great breakfast (seriously, how did I survive before discovering outgurt??) I hit the couch for some sloth-inspired laziness. A friend of mine lent me the book “The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic” by Sophie Kinsella, which is the book on the which the movie “Confessions of a Shopaholic” was based. It’s such a fun read. It’s what I like to call a ‘popcorn’ book – it’s entertaining despite not having much substance. Books like this definately have their place. As much as I like a deeper, more intellectual read, I love this kind of thing too.

Given all the exertion in the morning, I actually ended up taking a nap on the couch in front of the fireplace. I haven’t napped at all since my exams finished (I used to nap all the time while I was studying).

I spent Saturday watching lots of movies. I started with ‘I am Legend’ with Will Smith. I think Will Smith is great and even though the ending of this movie disappointed me, I still enjoyed it. But I cried in the bit about the dog. Nothing makes me cry more than a dog dying in a movie :-( I watched some Harry Potter too!

For dessert on Saturday I had two of my favourite things - cherries and 70% dark chocolate. I tried some 85% dark chocolate the other day and it was so intense! I could only eat the tiniest amount of it. Are you a dark chocolate fan? If so, how dark do you go?

Dessert Sun

I figure I might as well tell you about my Sunday, given that I’m sparse on Saturday pictures.

For breakfast I had more outgurt and tofu, and blended through some broccoli and vanilla protein powder as well.

Breakfast sun

After breakfast, I met my friend at the gym and we did an hour of weights together. We did legs, chest, back and abs. It was a good session and it made me realise I’m going to miss lifting weights when I’m overseas. And imagine all the muscle I will lose! That makes me sad. It’s one thing to squeeze in a run while in a foreign country, it’s harder to hit the gym for some strength training (especially if you are cheap like me!)

I had some Abu topped broccoli and two hardboiled eggs when I got back from the gym. I also had an (unpictured) green monster with a scoop of protein powder, spinach, mango and cottage cheese. Has everyone tried Pbu/Abu already? It’s good stuff!

Lunch sun

In the afternoon my beautiful friend Jess, who will be house-sitting (and more appropriately, dog-sitting!) while my parents are away (they are going to spend a month with me in Poland) came over to get a run-down on our house. Most of the discussion revolved around Phantom (our dog) and his likes/dislikes. I swear, the dog is so spoilt! But we love him to bits and I have no doubt mum will be using Skype often to call back home and check up on him.

Dinner was some delicious stuffed red capsicums. I should have taken a photo of the stuffing but was too hungry to even think about it! These were filled with a minced chicken and sweet potato mixture and topped with a little bit of cheese. So delicious!

Dinner sun 1

And the other part of dinner consisted of possibly my favourite food – a tomato, onion and eggplant bake that my dad makes. Here it is out of the oven.

Dinner sun 2

… and what it looks like inside.

Dinner sun 3

And of course – there was some salad too.

Dinner sun 4

I read somewhere that iceberg lettuce isn’t very good for you. Does anyone know? We don’t normally use iceberg lettuce, but mum has temporarily stopped buying romaine after all the bugs on it really creeped me out. We clean our lettuce really well, but still, those little fly things make my stomach turn. I’m quite neurotic and spend ages looking over each piece of lettuce to make sure it’s clean. It’s quite time consuming.

On a final note, I wanted to wish luck to the ever-talented Susan who is participating in a triathalon tomorrow (well, my today!) Good luck Susan!!!

And I hope everyone else has a fabulous Monday :-)

Yum, tomato, onion, and eggplant bake? That just sounds sooo good!! Also, I love any dark chocolate, no matter what kind it is. IN fact, I just bought some Hershey’s Special Dark chocolate on sale at the store! I love finding it on sale because it can be super expensive sometimes.

As for my peanut butter with Omega-3, maybe we are a bit spoiled here in the US. But obviously they haven’t perfected this concoction quite yet. I’m ok with my JIF for now.

When you come to the US and try Reese’s, you must try the regular Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. They are just chocolate covered peanut butter and they are “orgasmic” (sorry, that’s the only way I can describe them! They just melt in your mouth and ooze yummy goodness. They taste great in milkshakes and on top of ice cream too!!!

I’m watching the tennis!! Great match!

    Hi girlie

that dish your dad made looks delicous! and ice berg lettuce isnt unhealthy, its just not great in terms of vitamins and minerals etc…like all the other darker lettuces have alot more nutrients in them…iceberg lettuce has a really high water content!

way to go for running in that rain :) i always find it kind of refreshing, but when you dont feel like it, its not that fun. Im sure you felt great after though!

ooo i love cherries! i havent had any in aaagges, i need to get some asap after seeing them on your blog :)

    sleep well hun!

I just finished the book “Remember Me” by Sophie Kinsella, it’s another good one!

  5. 5 insideiamdancing July 6, 2009 at 1:59 am

I am not watching Wimbledon nor have I seen any Harry Potter movies :( But, I do secretely love The Shopaholic books!

I can’t eat dark chocolate- I know it’s good for you, but I figure it’s chocolate. I’ll get my antioxidants elsewhere!

I don’t think iceberg is BAD for you, it just is primarily water and not high in vitamins so as far as salad bases go, there are more nutrient dense options. But if you eat a varied diet and get other sources of vegetables, nothing wrong with iceberg in there too!

  6. 6 Alison July 6, 2009 at 2:02 am

I think iceberg lettuce is basically sold water – like celery – neither bad nor good for you.

I love dark chocolate. I just bought some 85% chocoalte. I can’t wait to eat it.

I’ve never tried the Shopaholic books, but I love having “junk” books to read. Mostly, my easy reads are young-adult novels.

Are you a fan of the Australian Open? My mother doesn’t like to watch it because the time difference is so screwy. She doesn’t like the French Open either because she doesn’t like the color of the clay :-)

  7. 7 psychoj1 July 6, 2009 at 2:45 am

I’ve heard that too about iceberg. I don’t think it’s BAD for you, I just don’t think it’s as good for you as say, spinach or romaine.

I LOVE dark chocolate. I have been eating 72% and I think that’s as dark as I’ve gone. I’d like to try 85% though!

    Mmm, love your oatgurt :D

i love the shopaholic books! you are so right, they are great for a light fluffy read :) the whole series is pretty cute!!

  9. 9 Robin July 6, 2009 at 4:16 am

It’s funny seeing a post that says July 6 – I was like, isn’t it July 5 today? But you’re in Australia! So now that makes sense :)

  10. 10 JB July 6, 2009 at 4:42 am

it’s not that iceburg lettuce is BAD for you, it just doesn’t have as many of the nutritional benefits that darker, leafier greens have. so you’re pretty much putting nothing into your body when you eat iceburg lettuce. it’s like eating water. but it doesn’t have any negative qualities…that i know of. so eat it up if you want to! it’s not like you don’t get a trillion health benefits from your breakfasts alone. :)

and i’m the exact same as you when it comes to dark chocolate. my favorite dark chocolate is 70% cacao content, but the last time i bought a bar i decided to try 85%. i was able to eat a few pieces along with something sweet, but i wouldn’t be able to eat it alone because it’s just not yummy enough! i think 70% is perfect. if i were to find a 75%, i might give that a try.

  11. 11 Em July 6, 2009 at 5:35 am

wow all of your food looks great, as always!

  12. 12 Susan July 6, 2009 at 6:41 am

Thanks for the shout-out Ashley!!! I’m alive!! :D I’m just winding down with some blog reading now before I get started on my triathlon-sized post ;)

Sunday’s dinner looks fab!!! Does your grocery store sell plain ole’ “green lettuce?” That’s what I buy sometimes when I’m not feeling the romaine or spinach. It’s darker in colour, so I assume it’s at least better than iceberg :)

I wonder if there will be gyms in Europe that will let you pay per visit?? Most of the gyms in Canada do that for you if you ask nicely enough. Or maybe go to a university gym and pretend to be a foreign student and forgot your card :P

Our whole family has been glued to the tv while watching the men’s final (in the afternoon for us). It was such a fantastic match! I was rooting for Roddick, too, but Federer was just the better player today. Glad someone else shares my Wimbledon obsession!

The stuffed peppers and onion/tomato/eggplant bake look delish! I love veggie-based meals.

Like everyone else has said, iceberg just isn’t very nutritional, but it’s not bad for you as far as I know.

  14. 14 april July 6, 2009 at 10:36 am

Do you use an immersion blender for those oats? I really need to try them! Except I don’t have an immersion blender.. just a regular one. hmm…

  15. 15 burpexcuzme July 6, 2009 at 12:43 pm

stuffed peppers look AWESOME! and with sweet ptoatoes? and melted cheese on top? HEAVEN~
And the Shopaholic series were one of my faves! I always felt a bit guilty reading such chick books, though, but hey, anything that helps you relax!

  16. 16 burpexcuzme July 6, 2009 at 12:51 pm

oh, btw: for the kabocha oats, I add in roasted kabocha flesh (3/4 cupish to 3/4 cup dry oats), cinnamon, maple syrup, water, milk, salt, vanilla. Then pile on the AB and crushed almonds on top!

  17. 17 buffmuffy July 6, 2009 at 2:50 pm

iceburg lettuce basically is just water and has barely any nutritional value to it. but its not bad! just kind of pointless! a filler with no benefits per say!

  18. 18 coco July 6, 2009 at 9:23 pm

I love dark chocolates but can’t handle more than 80%.
running group? so cool is that! I’m thinking of joining a biking group now! ;)
traveling will make work out harder but definitely manageable because you’ll be walking a lot and for strength training yoga is a great option to do wherever you go! Can’t wait to see your solo trip around the world! the experience is unique and I’m sure you’ll learn so much about the world and yourself! :)

  19. 19 Maria July 7, 2009 at 3:24 am

You have such creative bowls of oats, Ashley! I love having various books to read too, both the deep and not so deep ;) . Eeek, I hate it when dogs die in movies too—I bawl my eyes out!

I used to only go ~55% dark, but now am able to enjoy 70%. A bit bitter, but still sweet and yummy! ABU is good stuff!

Oooh, those stuffed red capsicums sounds and look delectable, along with that eggplant dish! Iceberg is not bad for you, it’s just like water–not nutritious but hydrating :) . So no worries!

Hope you have a fabulous Monday too!

  20. 20 justine July 7, 2009 at 4:20 am

Hey, That eggplant thing looks amazing!! Any possibility of getting the recipe? I tried ABU today but I think it was to watery. I have stuffed red peppers on the menu this week. I have never made them but I found a recipe that looks great. I love oatgurt!! Isn’t it amazing? From what I know iceberg lettuce is good it just doesn’t have as much nutritional value as other greens.

  21. 21 Kailey July 7, 2009 at 8:08 am

wow 1 a.m you night owl :) haha
lovely looking bowl of oatgurt, for a minute I thought it was oat bran!

  22. 22 Astra Libris July 7, 2009 at 9:09 am

Ooooh, your dad’s eggplant bake sounds SO delicious!! I adore eggplant!

I also adore 85% cacao dark chocolate… :-) SO intense! I’m the same way, though – I can only nibble one bit, but it’s such a heavenly, heavenly nibble… :-)

I’m so psyched, hearing about your plans for abroad! I’m already looking forward to your posts about all the glorious meals and sights you’ll discover! :-)

In the meantime, I’m seriously craving one of your gorgeous bowls of oatgurt now… :-)

  23. 23 smallchangesaddup July 8, 2009 at 12:31 am

The tennis was so good, I thought the final set was never going to end! I’m British, so really wanted Murray to get through to the final, but it was an amazing match nonetheless. Federer and Roddick are both fantastic, but it is a shame Roddick missed out.

  24. 24 Heather Eats Almond Butter July 8, 2009 at 6:19 am

    Ashley,
I’m trying a new oatgurt experiment this week. Can’t wait to taste it tomorrow. I crave that stuff – seriously, as soon as I woke up this morning, I attacked what was left of our supply in the fridge. Love me some oatgurt!

I also love super dark chocolate. I’ll eat 100%. YUM. Anything less than 70% tastes almost too sweet to me now – never thought I’d say that.

When you come to Nashville, you can use our dumbbell set. :)

  25. 25 Graze With Me July 9, 2009 at 8:37 am

Wow those peppers look absolutely delicious! I need to make that sometime. I think iceberg (as everyone else said) is just water. I’d say it’s still “good” for you (because how can water be bad?) but it’s not a nutritional powerhouse by any means.

Oatgurt huh? Heather’s version always looks so breadlike and yours is so creamy. Both versions look amazing though, I may have to experiment with that soon…

  26. 26 Lindsey July 9, 2009 at 9:50 am

Ashleyyy….Where have you been?! Just checking in to see how you are. Hope all is well!

  27. 27 Gina July 9, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Thanks so much for your comment on my blog. You know, it’s great that you can read something and admit to yourself that you may fit into that description. That is the first sign that you are going to be ok and get through any issues that you may have. When I first admitted to myself that I had a problem, I started recovering slowly after that moment. The fact that you are aware of your issues and are working towards making them better, is awesome. Everyone has some type of eating issue if you think about it. Anyone who is on a diet right now has some type of disordered eating issue, or issue with food in general.

On the topic of binge eating, don’t ever feel bad about it. That, again, is something that so many people do (I would make a random guess and say about 70% of all human beings binge eat at least once a week, including binge drinking). It happens to me too, and it especially happened when I was recovering from my anorexia.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and thanks for being open with me!
